Comfort Maple

This fall I discovered a hidden treasure in Niagara, the Comfort Maple. The Comfort Maple is believed to be Canada's oldest and finest Sugar Maple Tree.

In 1975, the Comfort Maple was estimated to be 400 - 500 years old by the Ontario Forestry

Association. That would make the tree 441-541 years old in 2016. (Canada will be 150 years old in 2017). Located on Metler Road in Pelham, this tree towers over 24.4 metres at its crown with a trunk circumference of 6 metres.

The tree is named after the Comfort family, who acquired the land in 1816. A township map from later in the 19th century shows the land owned by John B. Comfort, and a sign at the site tells visitors that the tree and the land around it were donated to the Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority on April 30, 1961 by Miss Edna Eleanor Comfort.

I recommend that everyone visit this amazing piece of history. It symbolizes Canada's strength and tradition.
